Restoring a landmark Victorian industrial facade in Southwark

This case study showcases our work on the full facade restoration of the historic Menier Chocolate Factory, a Grade II-listed Victorian warehouse building in South East London. Located at 4 O’Meara Street, SE1, in Southwark’s Thrale Street Conservation Area, the Menier Building is a architecturally rich example of late 19th-century industrial design.

Originally built between 1865 and 1874 by the French Menier Chocolate Company as part of their international expansion, the building features five storeys of stock brick with pale stone dressings and distinctive Gothic-veneer detailing. Its prominent corner windows, rusticated brick piers, and stone cornices contribute to the historic streetscape. The building was officially listed Grade II in 1996 due to its architectural and industrial heritage value.

Working on behalf of the contractor West & Vittori, the London Architectural Stonemasonry team delivered a complete programme of external restoration.

Challenge: Years of neglect on a complex and ornate facade

The Menier Chocolate Factory had gone through long periods of neglect without proper care or maintenance. Many exterior features had deteriorated significantly over time.

With eroded stonework, damaged brickwork, and decaying timber joinery, the facade was at risk of further deterioration. As a Grade II-listed building within a conservation area, restoration needed to be both accurate and sensitive. Unchecked, the facade’s decline would have compromised the building’s integrity and its ability to support commercial use.

Solution: Full facade restoration with specialist brick, stone and sash window work

When the building changed ownership, London Architectural Stonemasonry were contacted by West & Vittori to produce a detailed costed survey for the full facade restoration. Our team identified all necessary works, which included extensive stone dressing replacement, brick repair and repointing, timber sash window restoration, and decorative finishing.

Bath stone elements were carefully templated on site, then hand-carved by our specialist stonemasons before being installed. Where full replacement was not needed, we carried out detailed restoration repairs to preserve as much original fabric as possible. Stone repointing was completed using lime mortar compatible with the existing masonry.

For the brickwork, matching stock bricks were sourced to ensure new elements blended seamlessly into the existing facade. Mortar pointing samples were prepared and submitted for approval before repointing commenced.

Timber sash windows and associated joinery were restored using a combination of epoxy resin repairs and splicing in of new timber sections. This work extended to the sashes, frames, and several internal doors. The project concluded with decorative painting and detailed carpentry to bring the entire facade back to life.

The restored building contributes positively to the character of the conservation area, enhancing O’Meara Street and neighbouring areas.
