London Architectural Stonemasonry successfully completed a facade refurbishment project at 8-11 Great Castle Street, Westminster, London, W1W 8LP, for the Langham estate.
Over nine weeks, our team conducted detailed surveys, stone replacements, and specialist cleaning, alongside granite and Portland stone repairs. Our work not only restored the building’s facade but also prepared the property for its successful reopening.

The challenge
The property at 8-11 Great Castle Street, Westminster, London, W1W 8LP, was being renovated by Richardson Nyewood, as instructed by the Langham estate.
As an approved contractor, the external works were awarded to the London Architectural Stonemasonry team.
We were asked to restore and refurbish the building’s facade.

Our solution
Once the scaffolding was erected, we surveyed the facade, and delivered a detailed costed photo survey report to the estate’s surveyors. Based on our findings, we recommended stone replacements, re-fixing of granite facade stones, facade cleaning, and repairs to the ground floor Portland stone cladding.
Once approval was given, we began to template the stones to be replaced, then cut out the failing stones, and began the specialist cleaning of the facade.
Using a combination of block and tackles and lifting beams, we removed the large granite sections that covered large parts of the facade. We then re-fixed them correctly, making them safe.
We also cut out and replaced damaged plinth stones, and repaired and fitted indents in some of the projecting sections of the building.
As there were new windows being installed, several of the reveals also needed indents and repairs.

By restoring its facade we’ve played a part in preparing this prime location property for its next chapter.
- The facade’s aesthetic and structural integrity has been restored, enhancing the building’s visual appeal and value.
- Safety concerns associated with the failing facade elements have been addressed, ensuring the well-being of occupants and visitors.
- The detailed and colour-matched repairs ensure that the building’s historical character and architectural details are preserved.
